Inferring Vortex and Dust Devil Statistics from InSight

چکیده

The InSight mission has operated on the surface of Mars for nearly two Earth years, returning detections first Marsquakes. lander also deployed a meteorological instrument package and cameras to monitor local activity. These instruments have detected boundary layer phenomena, including small-scale vortices. vortices register as short-lived, negative pressure excursions closely resemble those that could generate dust devils. Although our analysis shows encountered more than 900 collected 1000 images martian surface, no active devils were imaged. In spite lack devil detections, we can leverage vortex InSight's daily wind speed measurements learn about processes create We discuss data assess statistics infer encounter distances and, therefrom, maximum speeds. Surveying available imagery, place upper limits what fraction carry (i.e., how many are bonafide devils) estimate threshold speeds lifting. Comparing results tracks seen in space-based observations landing site, thresholds frequency track formation by encounters parameters with advective speeds, find evidence high at may suppressed devils, explaining imaged

A Multiyear Dust Devil Vortex Survey Using an Automated Search of Pressure Time Series

Dust devils occur in arid climates on the Earth and ubiquitously on Mars, where they likely dominate the supply of atmospheric dust and influence climate. Martian dust devils have been studied with a combination of orbiting and landed spacecraft, while most studies of terrestrial dust devils have involved manned monitoring of field sites, which can be costly both in time and personnel. As an al...

From Dust Devil to Sustainable Swirling Wind Energy

Dust devils are common but meteorologically unique phenomena on Earth and on Mars. The phenomenon produces a vertical vortex motion in the atmosphere boundary layer and often occurs in hot desert regions, especially in the afternoons from late spring to early summer. Dust devils usually contain abundant wind energy, for example, a maximum swirling wind velocity of up to 25 m/s, with a 15 m/s ma...

Quantifying global dust devil occurrence from meteorological analyses

Dust devils and nonrotating dusty plumes are effective uplift mechanisms for fine particles, but their contribution to the global dust budget is uncertain. By applying known bulk thermodynamic criteria to European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) operational analyses, we provide the first global hourly climatology of potential dust devil and dusty plume (PDDP) occurrence. In ag...

Minfer: Inferring Motif Statistics From Sampled Edges

Characterizing motif (i.e., locally connected subgraph patterns) statistics is important for understanding complex networks such as online social networks and communication networks. Previous work made the strong assumption that the graph topology of interest is known, and that the dataset either fits into main memory or is stored on disk such that it is not expensive to obtain all neighbors of...

Vortex Dynamics, Combinatorics and Statistics

This report represents an overview of the interconnections between the dynamics of large vortex systems, combinatorics, n-body problems and statistical mechanics. The combinatorial perturbation method for the 2D vortex problem is discussed; the essential combinatorial sym-plectic transformations to Jacobi-type variables which are based on a binary tree algorithm, is introduced and extended to t...
